Perhaps he did misspeak. Perhaps what he really meant to say is that it removed unnecessary code (in the sense that it has no effect on the results of the program, other than the consumption of time). I don't know -- I still haven't seen what I consider a good exposition of precisely what was done. I can imagine a loop in the benchmark code that does nothing but manipulate a variable that isn't even visible outside the loop -- such a loop is clearly redundant and can be removed without affecting the functionality of the code. Though such code is perhaps technically not dead, it might as well be.
