Felix has had an amazing season, the best no doubt, but it's hard to see the voters giving the award to a 12 or 13 game winner when CC is sitting there with 21 or 22.

Seems like performance vs Yankees is this year's criterion for the CY award. Otherwise I'd pick Sabathia.<g>

Tomorrow in AL Cy Young matchups

CC Sabathia (19-6, 3.14 ERA, 1.21 WHIP)
vs
David Price (17-6, 2.87 ERA, 1.22 WHIP)

Sabathia is probably the pick of New York fans and media, but doesn't have the kind of numbers that a Cy Young winner usually packs, except for leading the majors in wins (for what's currently the best team in the majors).

Price is 2nd in wins in the AL and has numbers that are comparable if not slightly better than Sabathia's, excepting innings pitched, where Sabathia has been a horse.

Felix Hernandez, who I regard as the AL frontrunner, didn't help his cause when he lost on Sunday, largely because his Mariners didn't score a run while he was on the mound (again), though he did give up 4 earned runs and so is hardly blameless.

Somewhat paradoxically, Felix also took the AL lead in ERA during that same start, when previous leader Clay Buchholz of the Red Sox collapsed against the A's Friday, putting Felix into the AL lead in three major pitching categories (innings pitched, strikeouts, and ERA).

If Price or Sabathia comes out the winner in tomorrow's game, their team also takes the AL East lead, as well as the Majors lead for best record.

Terrific matchup for early-mid September, if not mid-October.

Meanwhile, I just noticed that Jeff Passan wrote a nice piece about the AL Cy Young that aligns nicely with my position:

Matt Garza and Gio Gonzalez drop from contention.

The race tightened up this past week, with Felix losing in a game he bore some blame for (though his offense was shut out -- again -- while he was in the game), at the same time every other serious contender but Clay Buchholz and Trevor Cahill improved. I think any one of the guys characterized here as "Leaders" have a shot at this thing if they ace it down the stretch.

Despite some excellent numbers and jaw-dropping stuff this year, I think Felix needs at least two more wins -- and preferably four -- for serious consideration. Yes, the Mariners offense is historically bad, but not many Cy Young voters are going to reward a guy with a so-so record like his, and with the Mariners losing seven straight and rolling over on their way to another 100-loss season, he's not getting enough help. Buchholz and Lester both got wins against the M's this past week, while Weaver gave up just 1 run in 8 innings in a no-decision against them.

Better teams are making it harder on their Cy Young rivals.
