Yes its a costly mistake, but a very rate one. Its costs might be measured in the low tens of billions range, the costs of not drilling for new oil would be much higher. The cost of the moratorium is lower but the chance that it would actually prevent a serious spill is close to zero (unless its continued forever, in which case the chance it would prevent a spill go to "low", and the cost goes from less than a spill to much more than a spill)

Absolutely. Unfortunately, Obama was elected and we are paying for it...

There are some mistakes which are too costly to happen even once.
