Ed...Seems to me WSTL? check it out. PRESS RELEASE : May 19, 1997 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Bell Atlantic Announces Westell and DSC Selected to Provide Advanced ADSL Systems SuperVision ADSL System to Enable Commercial Deployment of High-Speed Network Access Services ------------------------------------------------------------------------ AURORA IL, May 19, 1997 ... Westell Technologies (NASDAQ: WSTL) today announced, they are developing their SuperVision Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) solution for use on DSC platforms within the Bell Atlantic network. The Westell/DSC ADSL system solution will provide Bell Atlantic's customers with high speed broadband services over existing copper phone lines. High speed Internet access, work-at-home, small office/home office, video-on-demand, and telecommuting are among the many services expected to be available from Bell Atlantic using the SuperVision ADSL solution. The DSC's Litespan Next Generation Digital Loop Carrier (NGDLC) system platforms will be enriched with Westell's SuperVision ADSL technology to permit the delivery of commercial broadband services for Bell Atlantic and other customers on a worldwide basis. Westell is providing rate adaptive digital subscriber line (RADSL) systems, supporting speeds up to 7.192 Mbps downstream and 1.088 Mbps upstream, using GlobeSpan's„ CAP (carrierless amplitude phase modulation) transceiver technology. ADSL capability is accomplished by adding asymmetric ATM cell transport functionality and ADSL plug-ins to the channel banks. Westell and DSC are jointly developing the ADSL central office equipment to reside in the Litespan system, with Westell expected to provide the customer premise ADSL modem. The modems will initially provide 10BASE-T connection to the CPE, other versions of the remote unit will include both 10BASE-T and ATM25 customer interfaces. ADSL can be added to existing systems without interruption to current narrowband services. Full ADSL capability can be accomplished by adding ABCU control modules and ADSL line units. These new ADSL line cards can plug into any slot in a channel bank. ADSL service can then be provided by deploying new channel banks or by using empty slots in existing deployed channel banks. This minimizes the start-up costs of implementing ADSL. This new ADSL capability can be applied to Bell Atlantic's embedded Litespan systems as well as future deployments. Rob Faw, CEO, Westell, Inc., stated, "The beginning of an industry-wide deployment of commercial broadband service applications using ADSL has begun. We are delighted to be partners with DSC providing leading edge broadband system solutions in support of this important new Bell Atlantic service. ADSL technology will soon be the marketplace's most significant access tool for businesses and consumers, providing current and future network service providers and their customers with greatly advanced data and video services, worldwide." "SuperVision has, through rigorous testing, proven itself to be a highly reliable delivery vehicle for commercial broadband services. It is affordable and efficient, offering several times higher bandwidth at an equitable cost. We believe the relationship we have formed with DSC's Litespan platform will work well for many network service providers and their millions of customers around the world. We expect that Bell Atlantic's customers will be among the first of a growing population of SuperVision ADSL users to embrace and profit from a vastly extended range of affordable broadband services," Faw concluded.
