The Scientific American special edition on microprocessors goes into this pretty deep. You should get a copy if you are interested in this type of thing!

I won't embarrase myself with trying to summarize it. I'm not ready to talk about N and P material, and all that stuff. Never even heard of a soft x-ray before this morning.

The first known reference to this was in the early translations of the Book of Genesis in the Bible.

Loosely translated, it described the doubling of various products - man, which then multiplied to become man + woman, etc., over a specific time frame.
