More - re CFL's and children and pregnant women:

ct.gov

......
Health experts do not expect to see illness from exposure to broken CFLs in most people. This is because CFLs contain such a small amount of mercury. However, even small exposures can
affect the developing brain and central nervous system in fetuses and young children. This is why pregnant women and young children should stay out of a room where a CFL has broken until several days after the clean-up.

......
Tips To Prevent Breaking CFLs In the Home
Consider not using CFLs in playrooms, children’s bedrooms, and other areas where there may be an increased chance of bulb breakage.

[ And what alternative are you allowing people, oh beneficient government overlord? ]

Consider putting a drop cloth on the floor when changing CFLs.

[ You've got to be kidding. ]

Consider not storing too many spent CFLs in the home before recycling. This reduces the chance of accidental breakages.

Cleaning Up a Broken CFL

So let's see if I have this right.

The government considers lead to a hazardous material. There are reams of regulations dealing with lead paint remediation and contractors are now required to pay to take a special course on lead paint remediation and are to go about removal of lead paint in houses much the same way asbestos is removed (tenting, sealing the area, etc.).

Yet the government is mandating that people purchase light bulbs containing mercury, another known hazardous material, and use them in place of incandescent bulbs? We all know bulbs will be broken in the course of their use.

The inmates are running the asylum!

Good Grief....I knew there were tough warnings on CFL bulbs...but that Government warning is way beyoond reason!!!

Everyone, circulate that warning via your email today....start raising a ruckus as much as you are able. Let these idiots in DC know we are out here.... I will send it to my contacts this afternoon......... I'll just copy and paste the entire page that Brumar provided us!

What do they want us to do.....go back to candles?

Fluorescent light bulbs contain a very small amount of mercury sealed within the glass tubing. And it takes a TWO PAGE Warning from our Government to clean up any breakage of just ONE bulb!!!!!

I may go back to kerosene lamps if this keeps up.
