You see - in the US such a debate would never happen. To my knowledge, in every state of the Union the patient has the right to refuse treatment. A couple of years ago I was taking care of a woman who was near death, with a Hemoglobin of 4 - and she refused transfusion, while she continued to bleed. Fortunately, she survived - BUT there was never any doubt that her will would be respected.
