We went thru the new Target store in sunnyvale CA Sunday. It's a huge store in competition with Walmart evidently, with likely 100,000-1000000(?) items on shelves.

In the middle on a main aisle there was a was a monitor connected to a custom system(i think). The graphics were colorful and attractive. There was a button labeled 'search'. I typed in "Caltrate' (i had just picked that item up on a shelf 'miles' from where this monitor was), and expected to see a nice map labeling 'here---> there'. No such luck: "not found" came back.

I wanted to try more, but there was one or two people waiting to use the device. I'm sure there was more than one of these things somewhere but i didn't see any in a quick search before leaving. At the store's entrance there was an elaborate 'customer service' desk with two or three employees telling people where to go for things. Three monitors at this location did not seem to have the same software as that on in the aisle.

As an old system man, i could see this store literally cried out for a simple system that even i could map out: inventory list, location map , store map, $400(OEM rate)iPads all over the store and an in-store wireless connecting them. Program development on Macs that can keep everything sync'ed and up to date. Fewer employees at the service desk can then spend 100% of their time negotiating refunds, etc.

I'm sure scenarios like this must be on the minds of some of those executives that you mentioned.
