Bright under fire for joking that Pelosi may die - On Congress: Bright under fire for joking that Pelosi may die

August 26, 2010

Categories:House Democrats.

Alabama Democratic Rep. Bobby Bright is under fire — mostly from Republicans — for joking that Speaker Nancy Pelosi could die before she is reelected speaker.

The Montgomery Advertiser first reported that Bright, a first-term lawmaker, said Pelosi might lose her election and then get sick.

According to the Advertiser: "He suggested, jokingly he insisted to his audience, that Pelosi could fall ill and die in coming months. That remark drew laughter from the crowd."

The Bright story is being rapidly circulated by the National Republican Campaign Committee this morning.

Bright was once considered one of the most endangered Democrats but has successfully navigated the Washington waters by voting against nearly all of his party's priorities.

“I’m not here for Bobby Bright,” he told POLITICO earlier this month when Congress returned to D.C. “I’m here for the vast majority of my constituents, and not even my base or even my party matter.”

But Bright will get hit by Republicans for one vote: his support for Pelosi, the California Democrat, for speaker.
