WD2,
I went shopping today, the real kind like we all used to do where you touch and feel the merchandise and have social intercourse and face time with real people. The new IBM 166p for $999 (no monitor)is in the stores and looks like a real computer with all the bells and whistles. Lots of features not found in more expensive machines like the 56K modem. Just beside it was a NEC 200p (model34, no monitor) with more memory for $1100 that I almost bought. Next store had a 233p(store brand) with 64K mem, 56k modem, HP ink jet printer, full page scanner, joy stick, speakers, 17 inch monitor for $1299. The monitor is crap but another $200 will upgrade to something you can actually use. The name brand IBM tempts me as it will lots of others but the NEC has more features. The store brand kicks butt with speed and features. The store brand also had a $899 166p with 15 inch monitor and 33 modem that was getting a lot of looks from civilians (not geeks like us). How can IBM compete at $999 w/o monitor with that? How can GTW compete at $1500 and you can't even see it? Joe six pack wants to see it first. How much speed do you really need when the internet is the main reason to buy the computer and the system is jammed with users most of the time? Is 166 enough? Probably 100p with 56k modem is enough. The internet gives reason for a home computer at last. The other uses take too long for anyone to mess with. Check book? Forget it. Spread sheet for home? Forget it except for a few people. The home computers time has come but not for the use it was intended for, its a net machine. There is finally something to use a computer for. Computer in every room?
Coz

Well said. Why buy your kids an "expensive" box for Christmas when it will be a boat anchor in 6 months. Inexpensive Compaq or IBM at a local store where we can check it out vs. 50% more for a cow box in the mail? And that spotted box not only has sales tax now in most states, but also shipping costs. -g-

Regards, Dan

Yeah, it comes with a Canon BJC-250 Color printer. Deduct the printer and the monitor, and it's awfully close to the $1000 system everybody talks about. Here is the current configuration from their web page:

-------------------------------------------------------------- Configured Price: US $1274

The x2 modem is actually an OEM version of the US Robotics Sportster with voice capabilities, it's nice.

This seems like a very competitively priced machine!
