I think it is something like this:

Stage 1 sprain........bruising of the ligament.

Stage 2 sprain........small tears in the ligament.

Stage 3 sprain............complete tear of the ligament.

You can't really tell from the swelling and bruising, but some of that is involved with all three. The severity of bruising depends on how much blood there is.

I think stage 2 and 3 require surgery?

You can look this stuff up and also find out what kind of brace is best.

I like ish's explanation. Ice works miracles, and Docs recommend that ACE for a few days wrapped from toes to shin for compression.
