The US was much more pro China than pro Japan until the threat of Communism well after the end of WWII. A strong anti-Japan shift occurred with the invasion of Manchuria - en.wikipedia.org This later lead to boycotts of Japanese goods, and attempts to stop scarp metal sales to Japan. While looking for articles, I came upon this later article from Time magazine. It's written in "Timese" evidently the hipster dialect of the time, and will be unintelligible in another 50 years. time.com
