One reason is that they spend a very large amount of tax payer money (they are also heavily taxed) on social and welfare programs. Their companies can be more competitive because their workers are protected by government expenditures on health care, education, and unemployment insurance. Sounds like you are suggesting taxing the working man more and this allows corporations to flourish? There are some in congress that think the same way and their numbers are going to go up in November. They have extremely high labor costs but they maintain a healthy export surplus
