I may have mis-interpreted your statement.

For a contra factual history speculation, imagine if Japan had been anti-colonialist instead of imperialist - they could have help set most of East Asia free, possibly including India, but certainly Viet Nam, Phillipines (if they wanted), Malaysia, Indonesia, maybe Burma, maybe Ceylon.
