I hear what you are a saying, Paxb2u. I really do.

Of course, that brings us back to other old argument: "Who gets to decide what is a "normal" environment."

Who am I, or you, or anyone else to tell an inner city thug, a rural hick, or a suburban yuppie that there are more productive and rewarding things to do in life than smoking a crack pipe, smoking marijuana, or injecting high-priced heroine?

Curtailing freedoms and liberties is always a dangerous path, even when we think it is for the best.

I would rather trust people to live their lives as they want to, by their own standards and within the boundaries of the law, and nail those who violate the law.

If your point was that parents should not expose children to illegal substances and behaviors, I agree. The parents who do so should be nailed hard for child endangerment.

My parents were hard alcoholics, and they got into more than one sticky situation, but they never hurt or killed another soul. It wasn't easy for me or my siblings, but we managed....as I'm sure you have.

I can't be going around worrying what my neighbor is doing. If one of them decided to whack themselves out on drugs or alcohol and hurt or kill me or one of my family members I would want immediate retribution. That would include incarceration and restitution to me and/or my family. It would be enough to know that person was permanently taken off of the streets.

I don't want to live in a 1984 like world, but I would be willing to accept strict laws concerning the taking of a life.

Accidents are a whole different thing.
