AFAI recall, until the iPhone, when you bought any cellphone, it was the carrier that signed you up. But with iPhone, Apple worked with Synchronoss to automate the signup and authentication process.

Then Apple could bypass the carrier (Verizon Wireless) demand to control the relationship, and later, they didn't need Synchronoss either.
