Speed leaders: Westell Technologies Inc., the Aurora-based phone equipment company specializing in high-speed data connections, is making a play to expand into the European market by making a deal with Fujitsu Ltd. to supply high speed data transmission and system equipment to British Telecommunicatons.

Westell recently said it would merge with Amati Communications corp. of San Jose, Calif., to form a company that will be head-quartered in Aurora. Westell and Amati ae both leaders in the emerging digital subscrier line or DSL market that supplies technology to boost the speed data travels over copper phone lines by 50 times while still keeping the line available for regular voice phone calls.

As Bill Gates and Microsoft Corp. negotiate and make deals to buy minority shares in cable TV companies to supply them with cash to use in upgrading their systems to carry Internet transmissions at high speeds, Westell hopes the competitive pressure will spur telephone companies to offer their own high-speed Internet service sooner rather than later.
