You are too smart for me to think you can not imagine why people would be executed in a time of war under those battle conditions. Lacking prisons or any kind of accommodation for captured enemies, what option would you propose for your declared deadly enemies in time of war ... catch and release. War is not a Sunday picnic and especially in that time and circumstance it was graphically and unavoidably brutal. I do know that there were rules of war and that subdued enemies were treated mercifully.

That was your comment on why Mohammed was correct in killing 800 captured men ... problem is those captives hadn't attacked the Muslims. They had negotiated with Mohammed's own Meccans which had attacked Medina, but the Meccans, Mohammed's own people who HAD attacked the Muslims, they were not exterminated.
