Glenn,

My ISP has a T3 backbone, so that wouldn't be the problem in this case. I've also used other ISP's, and whenever I'm visiting a friend who has 'net access, I make a point of signing on and seeing how fast his set-up is. And here's the real tip-off: I have a friend with ISDN, with a two phone line set up, and guess what........just wasn't that much faster. Not at all what I was expecting.

Your comment about servers being overloaded, thus slowing or halting data, affirms my point exactly. Clearly, the efficaciousness of the internet appears to be largely non-modem related.

Consumers are growing hip to this notion, if people I associate with are any indication. Consequently, they are not rushing to upgrade to 56K, the way they did to 14.4K and 28.8K.
