Iomega and Symantec Announce New Disaster Recovery Solution Utilizing 100 MB Zip Drive and Disk

Business Wire - November 10, 1997 08:00

ROY, Utah--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 10, 1997--

Micron Electronics is first PC supplier to offer Norton Zip Rescue

Iomega(R) Corp. (NYSE:IOM) and Symantec(R) Corp. (NASDAQ:SYMC) Monday announced Norton(TM) Zip Rescue(TM) (NZR), a Windows(R) 95 recovery system that will combine extensive and innovative rescue utilities incorporated into the upcoming 3.0 release of Symantec's award-winning Norton Utilities with an Iomega Zip drive and disk to offer a powerful disaster recovery solution that quickly and easily fixes common Windows 95 problems. NZR will provide Windows 95 users with valuable recovery capabilities from Windows registry corruption, partition table damage, missing or damaged system files, boot record damage, lost or damaged CMOS and virus attacks. "We are pleased that our partnership with Iomega makes Windows 95 system recovery a long-awaited reality," said
Enrique Salem, vice president of Symantec's Security and Assistance Business Unit. "With Norton Zip Rescue users will have state-of-the-art disaster recovery capabilities." With this new technology, users can easily create a Norton Zip disk tailored to their unique system utilizing a blank Zip disk. Then, when a system disaster occurs, the user simply inserts the NZR disk into the Zip drive, restarts the computer, and a simple-to-use Wizard automatically
attempts to fix the problem, guiding the user through the rescue process step-by-step. Once the problem is fixed, the user simply restarts the computer and continues working. The cost of
PC ownership is increasing for both individual and corporate users. For individual users, technical support is often expensive, frustrating, and time-consuming. For corporations, busy help desks signal costly downtime and lower productivity. Norton Zip Rescue is designed to augment help desk and technical support services by providing users with a simple yet powerful tool for solving system problems. "The Zip drive is emerging as the standard that is
succeeding the floppy drive," said Ted Briscoe, president, Iomega Personal Storage Division. "NZR provides a compelling reason for corporations both large and small to standardize on systems with Zip drives built-in." Norton Zip Rescue is designed exclusively for use with Windows 95 based systems that include either an internal or external Iomega Zip drive.
Micron Electronics will provide bootable drive a: Zip drives, which will be available in early 1998, making the NZR solution even easier. "Micron is pleased to be the first PC system supplier planning to include Norton Zip Rescue with our systems," said Jeffrey K. Moeser, vice president of Desktop Products for Micron Electronics Inc. "This new solution perfectly complements Micron's commitment to replace the floppy with bootable Zip disks configured as drive a: across our Millennia systems."

Price and Availability

Norton Zip Rescue will be a standard feature of Symantec's Norton Utilities 3.0 for Windows 95, which is planned to begin shipments in November 1997 at a suggested retail price of $79.95. Norton Zip Rescue is scheduled to be available with all Iomega Zip drives beginning
in the first quarter 1998. Norton Zip Rescue is scheduled to be available for existing Iomega Zip drive customers during the first quarter 1998 on the Iomega.com web site. In addition,
Norton Zip Rescue is planned to be shipping with Micron Zip drive based systems beginning in early 1998. A Windows NT(TM) version of Norton Zip Rescue is scheduled for availability in the second quarter of 1998.

Iomega and Symantec have filed for patent protection covering various features and aspects of the recovery system.
