The pensions for California public employees are not matched anywhere in the private sector that I am aware of.

As, I suspect you are aware, the early retirement provisions in public employee pensions were negotiated largely as tradeoffs--not as much salary early retirement. The hope was that would help attract better workers. In the views of many public employees it's, at least partially, that contract which is being broken.

In Jersey, on the pension issue, the state government simply failed to contribute to public employee pensions funds for many years.
