Second, we need excellent police, firefighters, teachers, public servants in general and should be willing to pay for that.

Well the last time I took the test to try to be a San Francisco Fire Fighter more than 6,000 people showed up for what would be potentially be 30 positions. It is a very popular job...I suspect if one were to totally eliminate their pensions and moved them to 401ks they would still have a huge number of applicants. I am sure there are some public employees who are under paid but I would ask what the job turnover is in the private sector versus the public to get a clue as to whether the workers themselves feel they are not adequately compensated. Also in San Francisco and Oakland there are large number of highly compensated positions that sound like political payoff.. versus something like being a DMV worker or librarian.
