Ascend and Earthlink Team Up to Provide Turnkey Internet Solutions to Corporate Customers

New Partnership Agreement Streamlines Equipment and Service Ordering for Customers

ALAMEDA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 10, 1997--Ascend Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ:ASND - news) today announced a new partnership agreement with EarthLink Network, Inc. (NASDAQ:ELNK - news), the world's largest consumer ISP, which will enable Ascend VARs to offer customers turnkey Internet connectivity, including equipment, line provisioning and monthly service. The agreement gives corporate customers simplified, one-stop shopping.

EarthLink is not only a marketing partner for Ascend, they are also one of Ascend's largest customers, with over 10,000 dial ports in their network. EarthLink selected the Ascend equipment in part for its high reliability, which ensures that customers experience high availability and high performance when they're on the network. EarthLink recently won PC Magazine's Editors' Choice award for Best Internet Service Provider, amongst a field of 13 ISPs and online services.

Yer missing my point here, John. I don't dispute that, under optimum conditions, the 56K modem will accept data at twice the rate of a 28K modem.

Optimum conditions rarely exist on the internet. Most of the 'wait time' one encounters has to do with traffic and switching in the various pipelines, the amount of traffic at the ISP, and usage level at the source server. Watch the RD indicator, it tells a story.

To look at it another way, the argument for 56K is analagous to selling your Nissan Sentra and buying a Ferrari to make the drive from Los Feliz to Santa Monica, so you can get there 'faster'. The truth is, you spend enough time idling at stoplights and onramps, observing speed limits, honking at the cars putt-putting front of you, that both Nissan and Ferrari will arrive at their destination at the same time.

The roadway itself, rather than the modem, is the issue.
