I use Seagate's all the time. It creates a backup of my dual boot Linux/XP system and it works. I've used it to back up my IDE drive to a new SATA, and it worked also.

I may be recalling incorrectly, but you can download Seagate's with no problems. I think WD want's a serial number before downloading.

You would use the version from the manufacturer of the disk you are making the image of. It doesn't matter what disk you are saving the image to. Any disk will store the image for you.

If I am backing up a WD disk

The way your message is phrased, you would use the WD version.
