The Statue of Liberty has exactly and absolutely nothing to do with socialism. It had to do with French cooperation helping the US achieve liberty by throwing off monarchical rule. There were no socialist governments anywhere at that time, just Marx's scribblings in London.

If Palin had the depth and respect for actual historical context that I expect from a wannabe national leader, she would never have made the connection.

But this is modern stupid "Freedom Fry" thinking where France equals Europe equals socialism equals bad things. It's politics for four-year-olds who only know how to use finger paints instead of reading and thinking.

And in that magical world, you can make up any BS you like, dress it up with the right slogans and imagery and declare it to be not only a great truth, but an inspirational moment as well.

It's dumber than six bags of hammers by any rational measure. But hey, it works with the TP fans.

As for "Great being a destination country where people could come and be free to pursue their dreams, speak openly, practice their religion, and enjoy protections enshrined in law", that is fairly hilarious since the EU convention on Human Rights guarantees all that to a degree that most TPers couldn't stomach, since it means full rights and freedoms for folks who don't look and worship just like them.

Again, a very dumb analogy if Palin had any clue what Europe was ACTUALLY all about.

Maybe I'm missing something.

Not really.

If you are willing to restate what she said to make it what you wanted her to say, then all you missed is her intent, which you clearly did not wish to understand.
