That was the "cover" they used for advancing their agenda of spreading Marxism throughout SE Asia. The S. Vietnamese, close to a million of which were refugees from the communist north, were defending themselves against N. Vietnamese aggression all along their borders. Nobody was invading N. Vietnam. They subverted neutral Laotian sovereignty, both directly, as well as by routing their "Ho Chi Minh" trail through Laos, requiring the US to provide support to defend the existing fragile government. And then they did the same thing in Cambodia.. They created HUGE bases and stationed tens of thousands of soldiers in "neutral" Cambodia for the purpose of attacking S. Vietnam. Funny how everyone remembers Nixon sending US forces across the Cambodian border in 1970, but no one pays attention to the NVA and Viet Cong forces which had been there for years already, attacking the Cambodian government and dominating the local authorities.en.wikipedia.org US and S. Vietnamese forces discovered a number of HUGE caches of ammunition and weapons, the majority of which were destroyed or turned over to the new pro-western Cambodian government:en.wikipedia.org Of course, Cambodia couldn't have a pro-western government.. That would suit neither the Soviet, or the Chinese agendas for control and influence in SE Asia. So, in the course of both Bejing and Moscow picking up the pieces in the aftermath of the US withdrawal, the Chinese supported Pol Pot and inspired him to undertake a "cultural revolution" of his own....There is NO DOUBT that what inspired Pot to create the "killing fields" was Chinese inspired Maoist ideology. For that, China bears DIRECT RESPONSIBILITY. Piles of skulls were the legacy of China's involvement in Cambodia.google.com Hawk
