Because it was the reality of the times.

No one is saying that we should create harsh working conditions just to define ourselves via hardship. We fix what we can with the resources we have. That's what creating a better world is all about.

But the takeaway from that story is that one ought to be inspired by the acts of a maintenance mechanic who sacrificed it all so that his children don't have to. That's something that seems to be fading away these days.

I remember reading about a Manhattan (or Connecticut?) woman who got an abortion because, among other things, she didn't want to shop at Costco. OMG, what a terrible prospect!
