Ahead of the opening bell, Dow Jones industrial average futures fell 8 to 10,687. Standard & Poor's 500 index futures fell 1.00 to 1,133.70, while Nasdaq 100 index futures fell 5.75 to 1,979.75. Gold climbed to a record $1,296.50 an ounce before falling back to $1,295.60 an ounce. Overseas, Britain's FTSE 100 fell 0.2 percent, Germany's DAX index fell 0.8 percent, and France's CAC-40 dropped 0.8 percent.
