Why make up a story of being slaves in Egypt? Logically, knowing that one is a descendent of slaves in Egypt would seem a logical reason.

There is evidence of Asiatic nomads entering Egypt in ancient times as well. And looking at a map, the existence of Israelites in Egypt isn't exactly a stretch.

This is an example of liberal fundamentalists deciding if the Bible says something it has to false.
