I hope you were not trying to use your machine while MSE was doing a files scan. The initial scan here when MSE was first started required about 15 minutes to tell me everything was OK, which I already knew from previous scans of other anti-virus/anti-malware softwares.

But, I agree with you. I am trying not to be prejudiced, but I think MSE is another example of bloated M$ software that assumes we all use 6 GHZ CPUs with 8 GB of RAM with Windows 7. After all, programmers have to "earn" their salaries by producing something new and better all the time. I wish it were not so because MSE is much less intrusive than AVAST, but at what price on resource and memory use?

I think my 3.2 GHZ hyper threading CPU on an Intel motherboard with 2GB of Dual Data Access RAM should be fast and powerful enough for most Internet use.

I am using MSE on an old laptop (1.67 gigahertz core 2 duo with 2gigs memory) with no problems.

My machine is running Windows 7. Perhaps there is an issue with XP and MSE?

ILCUL8R made a good point re: scans.
Open up MSE and go to settings and make sure they are done when your computer would be idle. I have mine unchecked and run it manually.

MSE: I have never done a scientific comparison test but my 4 year old desktop running XP media center with SP3 does not seem slower than when I used Avast!

I usually have IB TWS trading software running and that makes java the memory hog. I usually have 11 tabs open in FF at the same time.

The single core CPU is a 2.2GHz Athlon and RAM is 2GB.
