off topic

Sergio,

It wasn't I who talked about setting buffers. BUT if you can run your telecom program out of a RAM disk. If the cache were also in that RAM disk, it should fly like an eagle, but I am not sure that the cache could be in there. Still, it would speed up things just to have the program there. I'll try testing that tonight.

There are negatives in running out of a RAM disk, such as potential loss of the RAM disk data in a crash. There probably isn't any data needed to be saved, however, so this might be viable.

RAM disks aside, you probably got bogged down because of a problem with the program's (IE or Netscape's) cache and library file. Try trashing both. Let me know how that works; if it doesn't solve the problem, I'll do some more trouble-shooting.

If you're running NetScape or IE, there's a way to trash these things in their preferences -- look for the preferences Edit Menu. But you can also trash them in the Finder on a Mac (they're in a folder in the Prefs Folder in the System Folder) and you an also trash them similarly via Windows' desktop.

Report back on progress.

Linda

Sergio, perhaps a faster modem would help. My scrolling is extremely quick with what amounts to a 128K equivelent (T1 connection) with only a Petium 90 which leads me to believe it has something to do with modem spead. Disclaimer: I know very little about computers-just how to push the right buttons.

Sergio -

I posted previouslly a way to cure Explorer of the SI sluggies.

1. Go to the menu View..Options

2. Pick the Navigation tab

3. Clear your history

4. Set your history to 3 days

Warning - after you do this, all SI messages will look "unread" (colorwise) for a day or so until you've read some new ones in each thread you read. And after that, only messages less than 3 days old will correctly show the "already read" color, and older messages will always look "unread".

The History is different from the Cache. I think the history is one giant file of links, and it gets HUMONGOUS if you read SI and don't set your Days of History low. I thought my laptop was dying when my history was set to 20 days. Only had the problem because of SI (every post is a new address for History to store)
