ISLANDIA, N.Y.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--November 10, 1997--

Storage Management Market Leader Supports Compaq's Fibre Channel Solutions

And Provides Fault Tolerance For New Compaq DLT Tape Library

First Solution For Fibre Channel In Windows NT And NetWare Environments

Computer Associates International, Inc. (CA) today announced that it is extending its award-winning ARCserve storage management solution to support emerging fibre channel I/O and storage technology, including Compaq's newly announced line of Fibre Channel storage products. ARCserve will be the first storage management solution to support fibre channel in the Windows NT and NetWare environments.

ARCserve, CA's market-leading storage management solution for Windows NT and NetWare, will exploit fibre channel technology to increase backup performance, enhance scalability, and create overall added value for enterprise customers. ARCserve will provide a cost-effective solution for leveraging high-cost, large-capacity storage devices across the enterprise.

A high-performance, high-capacity storage technology, fibre channel is designed for clients who need constantly increasing capacity and performance to handle their rapidly growing enterprise storage requirements. It also addresses the needs of customers who require simplified storage management processes, as well as those seeking to reduce their enterprise computing costs.

CA's support of Compaq's Fibre Channel technology is the first development resulting from the companies' Enterprise Storage Management Alliance, which was announced last year. Through this alliance, CA and Compaq are working together to provide next-generation management solutions offering advanced manageability, automation, scalability, and performance -- characteristics that will enable customers to migrate from proprietary systems to client/server-based open systems.

"Simplifying our customers' lives was top-of-mind when we entered into this alliance with Computer Associates," said Vic Mahadevan, Compaq vice president, Enterprise Storage and Options Division. "Together, our companies are delivering on the promise of true customer-driven design."

The companies are also collaborating to develop high availability fibre channel solutions, terabyte backup, and storage management solutions for data warehousing clients.

"ARCserve will exploit Compaq's Fibre Channel products to deliver high performance and scalable storage solutions to meet the needs of our enterprise customers," said ReiJane Huai, CA senior vice president and general manager. "Compaq's announcement heralds the beginning of a new era in enterprise storage."

CA and Compaq have also combined forces to introduce the industry's first fault tolerant Digital Linear Tape (DLT) library solution. By utilizing the Compaq DLT Library Model 3570, ARCserve 6.5 for Windows NT and its new Tape Library Option deliver error-free automation of the backup and restore processes, as well as fault tolerance previously available only on stand-alone tape drives. One large, fault-tolerant, virtual tape library can be created by applying RAID technology to the drives and robotics -- five of the new Compaq DLT libraries can be configured as one virtual DLT library with 60 cartridges, 2.1 terabytes of storage, and one 280 GB RAID 5 tape volume.

ARCserve 6.5, along with other CA storage, antivirus and communications products, will be added to SmartStart 3.5, the latest version of Compaq's popular software distribution vehicle, which is bundled with every server Compaq ships.

ARCserve 6.5 provides a scalable solution to meet customers' critical data storage management needs. Combining leading-edge performance, automation, and disaster recovery, ARCserve 6.5 sets the standard for Windows NT backup. It allows customers to easily manage critical data with such features as automated media management; a sophisticated, event-driven alert system; centralized administration and remote management; and extensive reporting. ARCserve for Windows NT is fully integrated with Windows NT 4.0 and 3.5x, providing fast, secure, unattended backups of data for the entire enterprise.

ARCserve 6 for Windows NT is a recipient of BYTE magazine's "Best of PC Expo," and ENT magazine's "Readers Choice." ARCserve 6 for NetWare has earned BYTE magazine's "Editor's Choice," NetWare Solutions magazine's "Editor's Choice" and "Reader's Choice Award," Computer Reseller News' "Test Center Recommendation," and Network VAR magazine's "Integrators' Choice Award." Additional honors for ARCserve include Network Computing magazine's "Editor's Choice," Network World's "Blue Ribbon," Network Magazine's "Product of the Year," and PC Magazine's "Editors' Choice."
