Climate (environment) effects evolution, look at redheads, sickle cell, why would you assume it doesn't affect intelligence ? Interesting how many stone age cultures existed at the time of Columbus - indians, aborigines etc. but I'm not sure it was climate.

That's exactly right, longnshort. en.wikipedia.org excerpt: A draft sequence publication by the Neanderthal Genome Project in May 2010 indicates that Neanderthals share more genetic lineages with Non-African populations than with African populations. According to the study, this scenario is best explained by gene flow from Neanderthals to modern humans after humans emerged from Africa. An estimated 1 to 4 percent of the DNA in Europeans and Asians (i.e. French, Chinese and Papua probands) is non-modern, and shared with ancient Neanderthal DNA rather than with Sub-Saharan Africans (i.e. Yoruba and San probands). Though less parsimonious than gene flow, ancient sub-structure in Africa, could account for the higher levels of Neanderthal lineages detected in Eurasians. If the African population from which Eurasians emerged from was already genetically closer to Neanderthals than other Africans, then non-Africans today would be more closely related to Neanderthals than Africans.

An early stage THEORY still (and a minority one at that) but there might be some (small) gene flow through from Neanderthal to homo sapiens sapiens. Entirely possible but very early days yet. Zero evidence for it in any maternal lines though, even the supporters of this theory say. (And the primary evidence supplied to support some small Neanderthal gene flow through to Europeans seems to be a supposition from a slightly higher incidence of microcephaly among various 'white' population groups....) The argument that these particular few genes came from Neanderthals and not natural genetic drift is still widely disputed among the experts so... I'd mark this one down as a very early stage hypothesis, still a long way from being accepted. (Could possibly have some truth to it, or could be entirely false.) Re: "cold" (Shorty... you still looking for them 'super smart penguins' to take over the world?)
