Actually I don't believe that they started out with a theory of causation.

They simply performed a statistical analysis and WEALTH was the one independent variable that was shown to have the HIGHEST CORRELATION to measured intelligence.

(Note: "measured intelligence" such as Intelligence Quotients are not necessarily any kind of measurement of the raw potential of an individual's brain, but invariably a certain amount of formal learning and training filters into the test's results. Basically I think it would be fair to say that given two 'brains of equal potential' the developmental process itself through the many years of growth, and the education and training of the mind along the way, impact positively the results of many types of tests.)
