Yes, "The Ranger, The Cook, and the Hole in the Sky" is the full title of the novella written by Norman Maclean. It is included in the book titled "A River Runs Through It," which was also made into a movie. There are other stories in the ok as well.

My friend knew Norman Maclean and shared many of his interests including fly fishing and the Forest Service. Maclean visited him at his cabin many times, and they corresponded voluminously.

I feel very fortunate to know Elk Summit and the surrounding wilderness. My very first job in 1962 was on Diablo Mountain Lookout, which is a four mile walk from The Summit.

I watched "Hole In The Sky" again a few days ago. Most details are accurate, such as Bill Bell's assertion that it's 14 miles from Elk Summit to the Bitterroot Divide, and another 14 miles to the mouth of Blodgett Canyon and several more to the town of Hamilton.

However, be skeptical of any stories about rattlesnakes. There ain't any on Grave Peak. Also, a saloon named The Oxford is in Missoula, not Hamilton (but it still exists). Minor details, known only to locals like myself.
