"Peak Civilization": The Fall of the Roman Empire

True in the strategic sense. Rome could not sustain its growth and dominance over conquered regions as limited resources were not sufficient to support either the lavish life style of the Romans or the continual expansion of operations.

But Rome would not have had that problem if the society had not abandoned the principles of civic virtue. The citizens were increasingly abused with the burden of service to an ungrateful upper class, and crushing taxes.

Every golden society which institutionally oppressed even a portion of it's citizenry has been destined to its own dark age. Our contentious generation shows no regard for values of day to day decency, common goodness, and a concern for the well being of others.

A healthy society depends on keeping a balance between strategic and principled interests. America and Americans seem to have abandoned the latter.
