I do live on a gravel road and have a well for water - love telling folks it costs $25 per year for all the water I want. I also have high speed internet access, work from home and make my living in UNIX/Linux and programming in C or perl. Who needs a mall when amazon is cheaper and faster, walmart around the corner is cheap and has fresh local veggies not to mention the farmers markets around here. Unfortunately I need electricity, since I opted for no fire place in the house - if solar actually worked, I'd have installed a system years ago - but with tall firs I get little direct light and of course this is washington so it rains a lot and is cloudy most of the year.

Lack of shopping malls, roads, electricity, supermarkets, etc. has no connection at all to American conservative political philosophy.
