"it is now known that they "know" what they are doing.."

I don't know that they "know" anything whatsoever. Given the lack of a brain (that thing universally associated with "intelligence"), it seems more than likely that the life of a cell does not involve thought in any fashion similar to thought as humans understand thought. They do possess and use information, however--but obviously not in the manner in which you and I possess and use information: not through a neuron network.

I am not surprised that everything that survives has evolved genetically to react to the environment in a "survival" way.

Some cell or creature doing the right "survival" thing is not sufficient warrant for me to conclude that they have "evaluated" the situation. I don't think a million sperm swimming for the egg is "intelligence". I don't think they have a clue. I think chemical processes interact with genetics to create an extremely THOUGHTLESS series of reactions. Is the reaction geared toward species survival? Yes. Does it require a certain response to chemical information? Yes. Is the response conscious? NO. Not if consciousness requires a brain. Because whatever scientists disagree on, there is no disagreement as to what constitutes a brain.
