For the country, I hope it all does work out eventually. I just don't see it happening without some major changes in how health care is delivered and paid for. Two girls I helped their mother raise, went to parent teacher conferences in high school, etc. are now both in medical school. They are working so hard to become MDs.... it seems we should have some other classification besides full MD that can help patients with the more routine stuff.. maybe far more physician's assistants... and make the whole path more a way to do public service like teaching used to be (when my mother was one) rather than a way to riches if you slave away years 20 to 4o then cash in on the MD work... Some friends got really sick when we were in Baja windsurfing. They went to a town that had an MD, he prescribed some antibiotics, they paid a reasonable fee (maybe $100 each for visit and meds) and got well. When I cut open my foot on a pier windsurfing 10 years ago I paid nearly $200 just to get a tetanus shot (I have $5K deductible) and I bet it is many times more today.... but my girlfriend got a tetanus shot yesterday with a few others tests for a simple copayment via her insurance. She goes all the time for this or that since the copayments are so low and that is all she has to pay.... Group plan... better coverage and less cost than available for the self employed.
