TJ, shutting gold mines is silly. We find gold very useful for getting electrons through Zenbu router antenna connections, wearing as wedding rings, putting in teeth, using as gold leaf, drinking in champagne, and myriad other purposes.

<i am in favor of shutting down all gold mines, and i have stated so many times in the past on this thread, >

There is a substantial gold mine in Waihi, a very pleasant town in NZ which derives significant income from the process. There is no environmental harm unless one thinks that CO2 from excavation equipment is a problem but that is trivial compared with the vast production of CO2 for totally pointless activities.

As I explained years ago in SI, as gold rises towards $10,000 an ounce due to financial relativity theory as $ head towards the speed of light, a gold culture will develop as larger proportions of people start scavenging for supplies in hunter-gather found-wealth mania.

Some have explained that the value of gold comes from the hard yakker of digging the stuff out of the ground. There is no reason to stop them continuing to do so, or having more and more people joining them if they wish to join the Atavistic Aztec gold culture.

It's silly, but that's people for you. Gold is just another element in the periodic table. Mere stardust spread around the crust, congealing here and there. It has a value that varies from time to time depending on gold lust King Midas mania.

You will find, and already know, that it's nowhere near as valuable as the phragmented photons of CDMA/OFDM mobile cyberspace. You clutch your little De-Vice in your hot little hand as you head off to do battle, leaving your cold-hearted gold at home or buried in some dark cave somewhere while life happens elsewhere. You drool far more over the magical processes of your De-Vice with only a wistful glance at the vices of youth.

Here is a little primer I put together for some garimpeiros on the safe use of Mercury.

HOW TO USE MERCURIO SAFELY

Mercury, also known as quicksilver or hydrargyrum, is a chemical element with the symbol Hg (Latinized Greek: hydrargyrum, from "hydr-" meaning watery or runny and "argyros" meaning silver) and atomic number 80. Mercury is the only metal that is liquid at standard conditions for temperature and pressure; the only other element that is liquid under these conditions is bromine. With a melting point of -38.83 °C and boiling point of 356.73 °C, mercury has one of the broadest ranges of its liquid state of any metal. A heavy, silvery d-block metal, mercury is also one of the five metallic chemical elements that are liquid at or near room temperature and pressure, the others being caesium, francium, gallium, and rubidium.

If you want to use mercury to recover your fine gold, place a little in a batch of wet (or dry) black sand mixture and let it roll around until all the fine gold is taken up and the mercury looks fat and floppy.

Place this blob into a small piece of chamois (even a handkerchief will do), gather all the edges and twist until the mercury ooze through the pores (or the threads) and leaves a button of silver-coloured amalgamated gold.

Using an old “throw away pan,” heat the button slowly over an outside fire. The mercury will evaporate and leave the gold free. Let cool a bit, the slowly add vinegar to cover. Let cool a bit, then slowly add vinegar to cover. Bring to a boil for 3-4 minutes, pour off vinegar and wash with soapy water.

CARE MUST BE TAKEN! DO IT OUTSIDE!

NO NOT MELT THE GOLD

DO NO USE THE PAN FOR ANYTHING ELSE!

DO NOT BREATHE THE FUMES!

MERCURY FUMES ARE DEADLY POISONNOUS!

Old-timers used potatoes. They sliced the potato in half, scooped out a hollow center big enough to build hold the amalgamated gold, then tied it with wire (could be wrapped in foil) and laid it in a bed of coals to bake an hour or so.

The mercury becomes absorbed into the potato and the gold will be shiny and free.

Drop the potato immediately into a pail of cold water. The beads of mercury will ooze out and drop to the bottom to be retrieved and used again.

BE SURE TO DISCARD THE POTATO REMAINS SO NO PERSON OR ANIMAL WILL EAT IT!!! DO NOT BURY IT!!!

Fine gold can also be salvaged by mixing water and oil together in a container. Shake well, then let the black sand settle. The oil will rise to the surface bringing the gold with it. (This should be the only time you use gold near oil) This process is called “frothing.” Gold re-agents and frothers can be purchased from chemical companies very reasonably priced.

I think it would be good idea to shut down gold mines that do not meet stringent environmental standards of operation. ggg

Do you remember the arguments made on these threads when gold was $250 - $300 per ounce? Suggestions that gold would go above $1000 per ounce were regarded by some as plumb crazy. -g-

News of the long term prospects of gold.
economictimes.indiatimes.com

Now I think $10k per ounce is doable in 5 to 10 years. The move will be non linear with big moves towards the end in an exponential type curve. I also expect gold prices to see some shocking big time reversals as governments make determined efforts to control the increasing price of gold. May see some drops in the 30% to 50% region.

/edit. Maybe more then 50% moves as some will speculate on gold price using margin with the inevitable outcome.

/edit. maybe bigger then 50% moves as some people will speculate on gold prices on margin with the usual outcome.

Determined gold bugs will be able to make use of these opportunities to increase holdings.

Maybe, in our lifetime, fiat currencies will be dropped as being unreliable and gold coins etc become the worlds currency by default? No involvement by government necessary as they will be powerless to stop the process. It will be world democracy in action.
