Put all those together and you are exactly right, there is no starting point for a viable centrist movement. People like Friedman are engaging in wishful thinking by default.

In my mind, whether we get a centrist third party or not (terribly unlikely) is less important than a hard look at the present plight. Nixon, at one point, had the last word on campaigning for the presidency--go toward the base in the primaries and toward the center in the general. Now only the Dems do that. The Reps are, in general, moving so far right in the primaries that the space in the middle is simply unreachable. That may work short term--the 2010 election cycle; I can't see it working long term.
