Who speaks for the center? What is the centrist plan. Can you have a centrist plan, if you can't identify a leader that can speak for the group?

Exactly Friedmans point - nobody represents the middle - the people.

At this point, Mary, there is no one. There is only disatisfaction with the two parties. The only organization that is expressing it's disatisfaction with both parties is the loosely organized Tea Party. So the country is in a process, the end result of which is unknown. Everything is formative. Growing numbers of people only know what they DON'T want.

But emotion always precedes action. The lack of a clear leader at this stage doesn't mean much in the whole scheme of things. And the fiscal state of the country probably will have to get distinctly worse for critical mass to be reached. A critical mass from which a truly bold third party movement can be launched and sustained.

The way I see it, we're at the beginning of something, not the end.
