The firefighters were dumbasses. The correct way to deal with the situation would have been to get the owner to agree to be billed, put out the fire, then BILL the assholes that refused to chip in. Make them pay triple! If they don't pay, sue them and win.

The fact that its happening anywhere in America is a real shocker.

It is common in rural areas, some will not send out the fire trucks to help neighboring cities unless the mayor or treasurer agrees to pay. Some will not come to put out barns unless other homes are threatened, etc.
