I wonder what the reaction would be if the Village Voice (or really any publication large enough to be recognized by a lot of people) decided to take a few examples of dumb things, or poorly supported theories, or political ideas they don't like, said by black Americans, and used them to argue "Black America Has Lost Its Mind"...

But surely, in a time of crisis, the country could pull together to fix this mess, right?

When the plans for "pulling together" involve making the mess worse or making new messes, than they should be rejected.

As for ACORN its actions and statements have been exaggerated by some. It didn't "steal the election for Obama". But it does deserve some of the attacks directed against it.

Immigration, legal and illegal, is a complex issue, or really a set of complex issues. People legitimately have different opinions about these issues. Having different opinions on these issues, or on the Mosque plans in New York, doesn't qualify one as having lost one's mind.

Schlessinger acted foolishly, in the context of today's racial politics, but she didn't use a the n word as a racial epithet. She talked about its use, using the word in that context, as Thrasher is doing in this article, but I'm guessing he's black and I suppose that makes it ok for him... If he is, than to the extent its percieved that way it shows how Schlessinger had a point (even if she clumsily expressed it).

"tea parties" and, from the start, had to defend themselves from charges that there was more than a little racial component to their movement.

Yes the left is rather free with baseless charges of racism.

And it turns out that the "grassroots" modern tea party effort has been largely funded by the Koch brothers

No, it turns out that is largely distributed in to many different groups with very small levels of funding. A couple of coordinating groups may have received some funding from the Koch's (but I've seen no evidence for even that claim, just innuendo and unsupported assertion), but they are a small part of the movement (and perhaps the least "grass roots" part of it). They have funded groups with similar views, even groups that have a presence at the rallys but that's hardly "funding the Tea Party". Also grass roots organizations receiving outside funding doesn't change them in to non-grass roots organizations, and such funding would in no way be astroturfing in such cases. Astroturfing isn't sending money to grass roots organizations its creating fake grass roots organizations, that in reality aren't even vaguely grass roots, but claim to be.
