They may want to make 8 x 10" cells eventually for applications like battery behind the LCD in a notebook. One problem with that scheme is that it makes the notebook topheavy, though - the battery is one of the heaviest parts and it's best to keep it in the bottom to keep the thing from tipping over. Another possibility is to cover the inside of the bottom part with battery, or make a bolt-on plate battery pack.

Meanwhile they are mostly sticking to making replacements for what the market is already buying. It only has to be marginally better than what's out there to sell, and customers feel much safer knowing that they can fall back to the old plan in event of trouble.

Folks! Some news we've been awaiting...

The remainder of the lawsuit has been dismissed:
biz.yahoo.com

IMO, the resolution of this issue helps to clear the way for a whole category of potential new developments, such as joint ventures, alliances, financial arrangements, etc. This uncertainty is removed for any potential business partners.
Also, we might find that the company is a bit less pressured to take an overcautious stance in public (e.g. You can count me in on this week's conference call!)
We'll see...
