Gold (i.e, the metal) is likely a break-even proposition for store of value. The mining stocks hold out the hope of at least some leverage to the POG. So they may actually allow you to come out ahead (though to be honest it's hard to see given their lack-luster performance in general since 2007 relative to the metal). It makes sense to own some of both....the proportions depend on one's risk tolerance and belief system<G>.
