I think you're reading it pretty well. GMR will take the envelope to
10G BPI, we're currently about 2.1G BPI using MR, and MR still has some life left in it. IBM is going to use its technology to advantage. The bleeding edge is not yet bounded by the BPI but by the electronics that has to read the data off of the disk. IBM is wetting their feet with a new technology, in a way that they can limit their exposure and climb the learning curve well ahead of the pack. They have probably already tested it quite extensively in the lab. It is now time to take that next step and put it into the real world and to see what else they can shake out. The roadmap is in place, its now time for the maiden voyage. Just remember not all maiden voyages go smoothly...
