just in in-tray To Fisher's credit, he makes calls to at least 30 different businessmen friends of his in his district each month to gauge how their business is doing. (I heard him talk and I spoke with him a few minutes last year when he was in Hong Kong). I get the impression that he forms his views more from these 30 conversations each month than all the other data that goes across his desk. I think he does "get it" for the most part and that he thinks much more like a businessman than an economic wonk.
