Commenting on the results, Cable & Wireless Communications' Chief Executive, Graham Wallace said:

''We have made significant progress during the last six months. The reorganization into an integrated communications company is complete. We are exceeding the anticipated synergy cost savings of over 100 million British sterling pounds (pounds) per annum. Despite the demands of the reorganization following the merger, we have increased revenue, profits and the number of customers, whilst introducing new products and improving customer service. The number of homes we provide with direct telecommunication and television services has
increased by 40% to over 1 million in the last 12 months. We have successfully launched the Cable & Wireless brand into the UK market and, jointly with BSkyB, announced the launch in 1998 of the UK's first digital TV services. Our ability to provide a complete product range as an integrated communications company gives us a powerful market position. We expect to use that position to continually increase revenues and improve profitability.''

Future Opportunities

Cable & Wireless Communications is a truly integrated communications company. The company has designed a digital television architecture through which it can use its all-digital national telecoms network to deliver over 200 TV channels to the customer. This can be done from a single digital head- end to the local franchises and then to customers' homes via a digital set-top box which will work with their existing analogue television sets. Cable & Wireless Communications is developing its own electronic programming guide to make navigation of the huge array of services that will be available through interactive television as simple as possible.

Cable & Wireless Communications has just announced a major agreement with British Sky Broadcasting (BSkyB) designed to ensure the successful launch of our digital television and Pay-Per-View (PPV) services.

Cable & Wireless Communications and BSkyB have agreed to co-operate on the introduction of the UK's first digital television services next Spring by co- ordinating the timing of the launch, and by jointly promoting and marketing digital services. Providing consumers with a clear and consistent message will increase the impact of the
launch of digital television in the UK regardless of the delivery platform. This will avoid consumer confusion, and support increased penetration and revenues. Digital TV will drive greater flexibility in packaging programs, providing consumers with the power to choose what they watch and when they watch it.

Access to the Internet is also a growth opportunity for the future. As well as offering PC access to the Internet, the company is researching TV- based Internet services. It is also addressing the needs of more frequent and business users of the Internet by trailing cable modems to give high speed access to the services people want.
