The other observation (and I've only made one other plane trip in the last few years) is that airlines have learned much from their friends in the financial service industry, now charging egg-management fees for everything from baggage check in to the right to use a faster TSA screening line. Didn't we the sheeple bail these guys out 9 years ago, to maintain a "thriving and competitive" airline industry? F that, I'll drive from here on out. Or charter a jet.

The airlines are nothing more than cattle cars. I dread flying and avoid it as much as possible.

Although I don't know the exact history, you can throw in the "efficiencies" (or elimination of competition) from airport consolidation which eliminated the TWA hub at St. Louis.

From Wiki:

"TWA's St. Louis hub decreased after the merger due to its proximity to American's larger hub at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport. As a result, American initially replaced TWA's St. Louis mainline hub with regional jet service (going from over 800 operations a day to just over 200) and downsized TWA's maintenance base in Kansas City. In September 2009, American Airlines announced its intent to shut down the STL hub it inherited from TWA, and in October 2009, American Airlines announced its intent to close the Kansas City maintenance base by September, 2010."
